With the view to create a safer working environment, Qatar Steel celebrated occupational Safety and Health Day at its site in Mesaieed Industrial Area. A great number of employees and contractors attended the event.
The program included presentations to generate awareness on security in general, heat stress, firefighting techniques, firefighting demonstration, road & traffic safety and etc. The event also included health tests to check up blood pressure, diabetes and others.
Qatar Steel’s Safety Day aims at enhancing awareness on how to prevent the associated risks, and this year it focuses on ‘Falling from Height’ and to ensure that all employees must have access to training, handling equipment, and knowledge of preventative techniques before working at height.
Mr. Ali bin Hasan Al-Muraikhi, MD & GM of Qatar Steel, stated that as a member of World Steel Association we decided to organize HSE DAY ahead of the Steel Safety Day as per the World Steel requirement. Focusing on the five most common causes of incidents, Qatar Steel will carry out an extensive safety audit. These five causes are: moving machinery, falling from height, falling objects, gas and asphyxiation, and overhead cranes.
“Engagement with World Steel Association benefit us by taking more proactive approach toward generation of awareness and honing the skills of the employees in meeting the standards of HSE tuned to international requirements.”, Mr. Muraikhi added.
Qatar Steel carries out an extensive safety audit to ensure the implementation of safety rules and procedures. As a result, there has been a remarkable improvement in safety performance at Qatar Steel over the last 12 months. The frequency rate of LTI’s has decreased from 2.30% to 1.41% against the world steel benchmarking of 1.76%.
Qatar Steel believes that Contractor colleagues equally play a vital role in the quest to achieve a safer working environment. Monthly Contractor Forum set up by Qatar Steel encourages their engagement and culture of working in harmony to make Qatar Steel a safer place to work.
