With reference to the Steel demand in the local and GCC market, and to cope with the 2030 vision of State of Qatar, a new project is initiated in order to increase the overall production of Qatar Steel. The Plant will be located adjacent to the existing plants in Mesaieed, and is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2013..
On 8th of March 2011 Mr. Ali Bin Hassan Al Muraiki Director and General Manager of Qatar Steel and Mr. Norbert Petermaier, Senior vice president of Siemens VAI signed a contract for 1.1 million tons/ year Steel Making Plant.
The plant will have Siemens VAI’s Ultra High Power 110 Tons Electric Arc Furnace, 110 T Ladle Furnace and 6 strand High Speed Billet Caster coupled with Sophisticated Fume Extraction System for zero emission.
The plant will be designed according to Siemens VAI’s best technology in the field of steel plant machinery, equipment and automation, in order to aim for the following objectives:
- Low investment
- High productivity
- High production flexibility
- Low specific consumption cost (Electrodes, electrical energy, alloys, natural gas, oxygen, water, refractory)
- High quality of the products
Furthermore all the engineering design of the proposed equipment will be of the latest state-of the- art assuring maximum safety and also special attention will be paid to standardization, interchangeability of the various components and minimizing the need for maintenance and access.
The signing ceremony, which was held at Qatar Steel’s Doha office, was attended by delegates from both companies.
