In culmination of the persistent efforts to protect the environment, and recycle the industrial wastes,resulted from steel manufacturing, for better reuse and reinvestment, and within the framework of consolidating and strengthening the co-operation ties between Qatar Steel and the private sector, Qatar Steel has signed a sale and recycling slag contract with Slag Aggregate Producer (S.A.P), located in Doha.
The sale contract was signed by Mr. Ali Bin Hassan Al-Murakhi, Director and General Manager of Qatar Steel, and Sheikh Khaled Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al-Thani, Managing Director of SAP. High officials of both sides attended the signing ceremony.
As per this contract, Qatar Steel shall sell to SAP one million ton of slag as steel wastes. SAP will process, recover the scrap and return it to Qatar Steel to re-use it in their industry. The ensuing aggregate will be utilized in the constructions and infrastructure works. SAP will be processing about 100,000 ton of slag a month.
Mr. Al-Murakhi expressed his delight for cooperation with SAP, saying the recycling and processing of slag has many environment advantagessuch as minimizing the solid wastes of slag produced in steel industry, and it has also economic advantages such as reducing the cost of safe disposal, in addition to minimizing the spaces occupied by slag, and have better space management at the plant.
Sheikh Khaledwas also delighted to sign this agreement, which would be very useful for the environment in general, through processing and recycling the industrial solid wastes including the slag, and it will also fulfillthe interests of both sides.
He added that this project aims at processing the slag and making aggregates and steel scrap. The aggregates can be used as raw materials in different constructions applications and uses. Such a method is used in Europe, America, some Arab countries and GCC states as well.
Qatar Steel now owns a steel plant in Jabal Ali in the UAE, producing reinforcement bars and wire rod. It has also some investments in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and looks forward to having more investments in other countries in the future.
